4 Costly and Easily Avoidable Mistakes People Make with Their AC Units

How many homeowners have ever tried to improve their home but actually caused more harm than good? It isn’t uncommon to find a homeowner who believed they had the know-how to make a simple improvement that ended in a financial disaster. Your air conditioning unit can be one of the most difficult appliances when it comes to repair bills caused by simple mistakes.

Many of the most common errors seen could be easily avoided if homeowners were educated about how their air conditioning units actually function. At Classic Air conditioning and Heating we have a knowledgeable team of air conditioning repair professionals to help you address your AC doubts. To help you keep more money in your pocket this spring season, take a look at these costly mistakes that could be easily avoided.

Leaving the Thermostat Constant

Do you have your thermostat set at the same temperature for the entire day? This can actually be a huge waste of your electricity which you will end up paying for at the end of the month. Consider the fact that you are paying for your AC unit to run, even when no one is at home to reap the benefits of its labor.

Energy Star recommends using a programmable thermostat to help you change the temperature at different points throughout the day. You can start by selecting the optimal temperature for the times of the day where you will be home. They recommend setting the thermostat up seven degrees during the daytime hours while you’re at work. At night, you should turn it four degrees higher than your usual temperature since you won’t be conscious enough to notice the slight difference.

Using this method, homeowners can stop paying for such exorbitant electric bills and save an estimated $180 per year.

Not Changing the Air Filter

Your air filter is typically out of sight and the idea of changing it is far from at the front of your mind. This small chore tends to fall by the wayside in favor of the more pressing activities you need to tend to each day. It takes only a few minutes and a few dollars to help your AC unit run far more efficiently and to prevent costly repairs in the future. These should be changed every thirty to ninety days depending on the makeup of your home, the type of filter you use, and possibly even your allergies.

When you refuse to install a new air filter for the AC unit, the unit has a harder time pushing the chilled air into your home through the ductwork. As a result, the motor has to work harder and accumulates more wear and tear over time. Motor repairs can definitely rack up quite a bill, and they will be essential if you want to continue enjoying a climate-controlled environment this spring and summer in the San Antonio heat.

The other major issue with a dirty air filter is that it can cause your coils to become clogged with dirt. Clogged coils can’t properly do their job and often end up freezing. This can cause extensive damage to the unit or simply create a major inconvenience for you while your AC unit is out of commission.

Using Substandard Filters

When you go to the home improvement store, are you immediately overwhelmed by the number of filters available? Many people adhere to a strict budget that doesn’t have room for expensive items that aren’t absolutely necessary to keep their home running. Unfortunately, quality air filters sometimes fall into this category simply because homeowners don’t realize what a substandard filter can do to their AC unit.

The most inexpensive fiberglass air filters only remove the largest debris and particles from your home’s air. As a result, the finer particles like dust, pollen, and pet dander can easily make it through your air vent, into your ductwork, and can eventually cause long-term damage to your AC unit. In comparison, a basic pleated air filter can prevent some of this unnecessary debris from overwhelming your unit and allow it to run more efficiently throughout the year.

Some homeowners might be tempted to try purchasing a high allergen-catching air filter to combat their previous substandard versions. In theory, this may seem like a good idea but it isn’t likely to have the results you desire. These are often too restrictive to allow your air conditioning unit to function effectively. It severely limits the airflow that can enter you’re your home. Because of their tendency to filter extreme amounts of pollutants from the air, these expensive models also don’t last as long as the basic pleated filters either.

It’s typically best to opt for a mid-quality filter with pleats instead of options on extreme ends of the spectrum.

Neglecting Annual Maintenance

When is the last time you had your AC unit serviced by a professional? While you can take the basic steps to monitor and maintain your AC unit throughout the year, you should invest in annual maintenance with a well-qualified company. A good technician can clean your unit and check to see if there are any repairs that might be looming on the horizon. If so, you may be able to catch them quick enough that you won’t even have a break in your service.

Annual maintenance is a great opportunity to make sure that your HVAC system has everything it needs to run smoothly for the year ahead. You can have a greater peace of mind that the unit is in tip-top shape and will likely maintain that status for the year ahead. It’s a wise investment that can prevent costly repairs in the future.

These simple remedies could help solve a wide variety of issues related to the care and maintenance of your AC unit. They can prevent future damage from occurring, lowering repair costs and keeping more money in your wallet this season.
