If you are confused about whether to purchase an air scrubber or a purifier, take a breath. Is the air fresh enough for you? Yes? No? Maybe? Worry not. Your HVAC system will require one or the other to function. They each use different technologies to achieve a similar goal. In general, air conditioning systems employ air purifiers or air scrubbers to purify the air inside buildings. But both are different in the way they accomplish this function. An air scrubber
For a literal understanding, you could think of think of it as you would a shoe scrubber and what it does. An air scrubber literally ″scrubs″ the air for you. However, when we say scrubber, we do not mean a soft brush of some kind. We mean filters made from some sort of fabric. Air scrubbers come in two variations; wet and dry scrubbers.
Wet scrubbers employ the use of liquid to clean the air inside your home. A wet air scrubber sucks in air through a filter infused with a little water, just enough to make it damp. Dry air scrubbers, on the other hand, suck in air through a dry filter. Impurities from the air, such as pollen, dust, and dangerous gases are filtered and as a result, clean and fresh air is released into the building.
Air scrubbers also have the capacity to filter out dangerous chemicals and toxic particles from the air. For this reason, air scrubbers are mostly used in industrial setups to improve the quality of air in manufacturing plants and commercial office spaces. Some manufacturers add carbon filters to air scrubbers to filter out odors. Others are manufactured with UV light technology to kill germs as part of purifying the air.
An air purifier
An air purifier on the other hand, is a device that cleans the air by passing it through a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter system. The HEPA filtration system is highly effective, removing up to 99.97% of air contaminants including dust, smoke, pollen and pet dander. The second variation of air purifiers uses ionization, a process involving electrostatic plates that attract impurities to the metallic plates of the air purifier. Upgraded models of air purifiers use UV light technology to kill germs and carbon filters to filter out cigarette smoke and other odors.
Air purifiers distinguish themselves from air scrubbers through their ability to release regulated quantities of ozone into the indoor air. Ozone is effective in neutralizing allergens, bacteria, and spores. The ozone however, is known to worsen certain asthmatic conditions in affected persons when released in excess. As a result, HEPA filters are recommended for home use.
Which is better?
An air scrubber and an air purifier will roughly give similar results. Although you can comfortably use either in your home, an air purifier is the most recommended for domestic use due to its asthma-battling features. Allergens, bacteria and pet dander may escape air scrubbers, but not the power of ozone. An air scrubber works best in a commercial setup, especially so because of its ability to filter out dangerous gases and chemicals.
