You know that changing the air filters in your home makes a big difference in how your HVAC system runs. Remembering to change the filters is only half the battle though. You still have to figure out which type of filter is going to be the best fit for your home. At your local home improvement store, you can probably find an entire aisle packed full of different name brands, styles, and promises. How do you know which filter you need to choose for your unique air conditioning system?

The truth is that the wrong filter can have a major impact on your home. Check out a few of these ways that the wrong air filter could be having a negative impact on your HVAC system.

High-efficiency filters cause your HVAC to work overtime

Some homeowners are tempted to purchase the air filters that promise to give them more relief from their allergy symptoms. They believe that the high-efficiency filters that promise to block out more allergens will be the best fit for their home. Unfortunately, not all HVAC systems are equipped to work with these filters.

Filters that have a higher MERV rating (such as MERV 8) make it very difficult for both particles and airflow to make it through the weave of the filter. When this happens, the air conditioner can no longer blow cold air into the home even though your electric bill continues to climb. You are causing more wear and tear on the unit without producing any real benefit for your home.

The wrong size can draw dirt directly into the unit

Is it really a big deal if you forget what size you needed and purchase something close? While you may be able to make your new air filter fit into its spot, this isn’t going to be great for your HVAC system. Both small and large filters can leave major gaps around the edges. Instead of the filter catching all of the dirt, dust, and debris, these items will now be drawn directly into the heart of the unit. This debris can cause serious damage to your unit long-term.

A dirty filter is always a bad choice

Maybe you believe that shopping for a new filter seems too complicated. Leaving your old dirty air filter in place is going to be just as bad for your system as purchasing the wrong type of filter though. It is too clogged to allow the airflow to pass through, resulting in an inefficient system with a high electric bill. However, it also allows dirt and debris into the unit because the filter is too full to filter it out anymore. You always need a clean filter that is replaced every thirty to ninety days per the manufacturer’s instructions.
