Have you ever wondered how the humidity level relates to the temperature? The weather stations always give you both the highest projected temperature for the day and the humidity, but some people aren’t quite sure why. The truth is that the humidity plays a major role in how a certain temperature feels, both outdoors and indoors. The humidity level in your home can be an indicator of your overall indoor comfort.

You can find out more about how humidity and indoor comfort are related in this simple guide. Be sure to read all the way through to learn what you can do to make your home more comfortable this summer!

What is humidity?

Humidity is the amount of water vapor that is floating around in the air. Most weather channels are quoting their viewers on the relative humidity. This percentage indicates the amount of water that the air is currently holding compared to what it is capable of maintaining. For example, a relative humidity level of fifty percent indicates that the air has the potential to double the amount of moisture it is currently holding.

At different temperatures, the air can hold on to different numbers of water molecules. Warmer air can typically hold more water than colder air. This explains why everything tends to feel muggy in the height of summer.

How does humidity affect comfort?

Most people are aware of what it feels like on the hottest day of the year. Your skin feels sticky and is coated with a thin layer of glistening sweat. Even though your body is sweating profusely, it won’t be able to dissipate because the air can’t hold any more water. The humidity makes it impossible for your body to function properly when it attempts to cool itself down.

Your indoor comfort is also at risk when the humidity levels inside your home are too high. The air conditioner may be running at full blast, but a humid home will still feel too warm. In fact, you may have to set the thermostat down a few degrees just to feel some relief from the sticky air around you. This means that your HVAC system is working overtime in an attempt to keep you comfortable, causing higher electric bills and more wear on the unit.

What can you do?

The first thing you can do is to purchase a dehumidifier to help draw some of the moisture out of the air. While your air conditioner can do this to some extent, areas that are prone to high relative humidity may want to consider purchasing a second unit that specializes in dehumidification. You can add a small portable version or install a whole-house dehumidifier if this is a year-round issue where you live.

The next thing that may be helpful is to ventilate your home when working with water. Be sure to turn the exhaust fan on while taking a shower or boiling water on the stove. This can prevent more water from entering your air, making things even more uncomfortable.

If you’re looking for ways to cool off this summer, you need qualified AC companies in San Antonio. Classic Air Conditioning and Heating can give you everything you need to make your house more comfortable this summer despite the rising humidity with a new air conditioner.

Impeccable Quality and Professionalism…

Had them install our system when building and multiple other contractors commented on the impeccable quality and professionalism of their work and staff. Worked with them on another building project and had equally great service and quality. Used them on a service call and Mitchell was very timely, efficient, and professional. Provided explanation in detail of what had happened and fixed it quickly. VERY impressed with this company and would recommend to ANYONE in need of a system install or repair service.
