Given the recent weather conditions in Texas, the status of your air conditioner is probably the last thing on your mind. However, you’ll be grateful for your proactive maintenance come summertime.

What’s more frustrating than asking someone to do something, only for them to do the exact opposite of your request?

That’s what happens when your HVAC unit breaks down. You adjust the thermostat to cool your home, but your vents blow warm air. Why is your air conditioner suddenly behaving like a furnace?

Here are a few possible causes behind your problem:

The Thermostat is Faulty

Your HVAC itself might not be to blame. Instead, your thermostat could be what’s causing problems. If the thermostat is sending the wrong signals to the system, then of course it’s going to produce warm air!

Just to be certain, check that the thermostat isn’t set to heat instead of cool. It might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many times this happens! One of your kids may have tampered with it, or it could have been knocked when you brought in groceries. Either way, make sure the thermostat is set to the right temperature.

The Vents/Filters are Clogged

The filters in your HVAC system purify the air from contaminants like hair, dust, and debris. You may be asking yourself, what do the filters have to do with the temperature of the air?

If dirty filters are obstructing airflow, your home won’t receive the cool air that it needs to regulate the temperature. Not only will it diminish performance, but it can also cause damage to the unit. The same thing applies to the vents and ducts, too; obstructions restrict airflow. Make sure that the vents aren’t closed!

Even if your AC is fully operational, you can’t enjoy the benefits of air conditioned air if the filters, vents, or ducts are blocked!

The Condenser Unit is Restricted

Look at the outdoor unit, the one that’s probably in your backyard. The condenser is responsible for expelling the warm air from inside your home. If it’s surrounded by a tall patch of grass and weeds, it won’t be able to do that properly.

Since the condenser unit is outside, it’s exposed to the elements. Components within it may be blocked by fallen leaves, twigs, and other blockages. The unit might need a deep clean to restore its efficiency.

It’s Low on Refrigerant

This miraculous compound is what absorbs heat from the air and lowers the temperature to a cool, refreshing breeze. Without it, your unit can’t do much air conditioning at all.

A refrigerant leak will cause your unit to run low on this compound. Pay attention to any frozen coils, warm air, or hissing noises coming from your unit.

The Unit Doesn’t Have Power

Your unit won’t operate very effectively if it doesn’t have electricity! This happens if the breaker trips, a fuse blows, or if a plug comes out of the outlet. Troubleshooting electrical issues can be dangerous—we don’t recommend doing this type of work on your own. You’ll need a trained and certified HVAC technician to solve the problem.

Had them install our system when building and multiple other contractors commented on the impeccable quality and professionalism of their work and staff. Worked with them on another building project and had equally great service and quality. Used them on a service call and Mitchell was very timely, efficient, and professional. Provided explanation in detail of what had happened and fixed it quickly. VERY impressed with this company and would recommend to ANYONE in need of a system install or repair service.
