Your Fall HVAC Maintenance Checklist

by | Sep 19, 2021 | HVAC

As the temperatures begin to change, you’ll need to shift your mindset to the coming winter weather. Part of this means preparing your home and HVAC system to keep you warm during the chilly months ahead. There is some important work that should be done to keep your home comfortable, and fall is the perfect time to take charge of your HVAC needs.

Here is everything you need to do to keep your HVAC system in working order this fall and winter:

Change the Air Filter

You should be changing your air filter about once a quarter or every three months at a minimum. The beginning of a new season should signal to you that it is time to replace your air filters. This will help keep your HVAC components clean and filter the allergens from your air.

Cut Back Landscaping

Head outside to look at your unit and determine whether any landscaping work needs to be done around it. If you have weeds, tall grass, or plants that are interfering with the unit, these need to be trimmed back. You should have about a three-foot clearance around the unit as well as over top of it. This allows it to work without being impeded by your landscaping. It also makes it easier for a technician to access your HVAC system for routine maintenance.

Cover the Unit

Because of the cooler temperatures that are certainly on their way, you may want to cover up your outdoor unit. You can purchase a cover at many home improvement stores or you can make your own type of shelter for it. There should be enough of an overhang on all sides to provide coverage for the winter weather.

Check Your Thermostat

Winter is on its way, and that means the temperatures are about to drop. You can begin to prepare for this change in weather by checking your thermostat. Switch it from the cool to the heat settings to make sure that warm air is blowing. If you need to make adjustments to your programmable thermostat to reflect changes in your schedule or routine, this is a great time to reevaluate your HVAC needs.

Schedule Your Maintenance

Fall is the perfect time to schedule some annual maintenance on your HVAC unit. A professional technician can come out to your home and survey the unit and all your ductwork for potential problems. They will also clean the system, test controls, change the air filter, and test electrical connections. This is an essential service that you don’t want to miss during the fall weather.
