Maybe you heard a loud squealing sound outside your house that you needed to investigate. Perhaps you simply noticed that your air conditioning was no longer blowing any air into the home. No matter how you found it, you now see that you have a large chunk of ice that has frozen over your air conditioning unit in the middle of summer. If you didn’t see it with your own eyes, you may not even believe it was possible. Should your air conditioning really be frozen this time of year?

Having a frozen air conditioner is always a sign that you need more assistance with your unit. A professional should be called to help you identify the cause for the ice buildup. However, there are a few things you need to do shortly after calling the HVAC company to help.

Turn off the unit

The best thing you can do is to prevent further damage to the air conditioning unit by turning it off immediately. You won’t be able to blow any cold air into the home with the ice covering the main parts of the machine. Running it incessantly could burn up the motor, particularly if the other parts are still unable to do their job. It still attempts to do its job, even though the other moving pieces aren’t giving it any help. Turning off the unit also allows the air conditioner to defrost while you wait for the HVAC technician to arrive.

Leave the ice alone

It is true that the HVAC technician probably won’t be able to do much for your unit until all of the ice is gone. However, that doesn’t mean that you should take matters into your own hands to melt it all. You don’t want to run a hair dryer over it or attempt to chisel it away with an ice pick. Experts will recommend that you simply let the unit stay as it is until nature takes its course in the brutal sunshine of summer.

Check the airflow

If your unit has defrosted but the HVAC technician still isn’t present, turn it on to check the airflow. You should also take this opportunity to change out your air filters. This can give you a good indicator of what might be wrong with the unit. It will be very useful information for the technician to have when they arrive at your house later on. It is advised that you turn it on simply to check the airflow and then turn it back off again while you wait.

A frozen air conditioner is never a good thing. You might be able to prevent some of these problems by having your unit inspected annually with one of Classic Air Conditioning and Heating’s air conditioner maintenance plans. We can help you catch problems early on before they leave you without air conditioning this summer. Be sure to give us a call today to see what we can recommend for your home!

We've been using Classic Air Conditioning & Heating Services for the past five years to include Installation of new units (flawless by the way), bi-annual check-ups that are scheduled and carried out without a second thought on my part, and in emergencies (backed up drain in the bathroom with a response time in under 24 hours to troubleshoot the problem). Their technicians are master's at their craft, personable, and cut to the chase on his service calls. I never feel like I'm being given the run around or a sales pitch with this company. Today, Mitchell Wesch went above and beyond walking us through what was happening and provided a multitude of options and expected timelines for future repairs. Once again, a great example of exemplary customer service. He was able to troubleshoot the problem with zero delay. We're ready for the Texas summer, and are already looking forward to the next scheduled service call. Thank you Classic Services for keeping our home healthy and happy.

Theresa did an amazing job! She informed me about everything she was doing and took extra pictures so I could have them for my record. She was quick but still answered all my questions. She definitely saved the day when my condensor froze over on the coldest day of the year, leaving my family in the cold. She was out at my house within the hour and had everything fixed in minutes.
